When Ra Rows through the Gates of Duat

When Ra Rows through the Gates of Duat

In the wake of the Grim Revolts, humanity has turned back the clock, regressing technology, science and culture to prevent another rise of the Machines.

Even on planets going through bad times, not all is doom and gloom. So, what about a cozy story that took place on Earth a few decades ago? The night Jacob met Kinondo, which happened in the mangroves of Alexandria....

That there are no mangroves anywhere near Alexandria? But there are! They are right next to the city!

But you are forgiven for not keeping up with the news from the planet.

Curiously, a Machine also said that there weren't mangroves in Alexandria that bloody November of 2056, right before the global human insurrection that wiped them out. Those top-of-the-line AIs are not around anymore, but Earth had to change a lot to keep them from being remade, and those changes were not always for the better. All said, the Machines left ugly scars in the fabric of our societies. The one you probably know best is the desire to forget everything that happened since the Middle Ages and that made advanced AI possible.

But there are more tangible legacies left by the Machines. Maybe the mangroves of Alexandria are one: a Machiavellian scheme those great minds were so prone to orchestrate. No, people can’t get rid of the mangroves, seeing as that ecosystem is perpetrating an ecological racket by preserving Alexandria's coastline from the twin devils of sea level rise and erosion, and, at the same time, intensifying the North African monsoon. And that’s not the only way those trees compel respect, far from it. But, for two men falling in love, can you believe the mangroves are not nearly as dangerous as Alexandria itself?

If you are unsure if this story is for you, a journalist interviewed Jacob some years prior, when the trials for witchcraft against Dr. Anasi Algumara were the hot thing in the news. Read the article.
